How Does a Heat Pump System Work?

It’s important to understand how heat pumps work. Heat pumps use the same outdoor compressor, coil and fan in the summer and winter. In summer, the heat from inside is moved through the refrigerant and “rejected” to the outside. You have probably felt this hot air as you walked by a unit.

In winter, the flow of refrigerant is reversed so the hot air is “rejected” into the conditioned space. Heat pumps have the advantage of using the same pieces of equipment for both heating and cooling. Normally, there is also a backup heat source installed since heat pumps are inefficient during very cold periods. Many times, this backup heat source is electric heat.

Dual-Fuel or Hybrid systems are a popular option that maximizes the heat pump’s advantage and uses a more cost effective back up heat. A dual-fuel/hybrid system is a heat pump paired with a gas furnace. It automatically uses the heat pump when outside temperatures are above freezing, but when it gets really cold, the gas furnace starts to run, and the heat pump is not used.

In the winter, this means a heat pump takes warmth from outdoors — even in cold temperatures — and brings it inside.
In the summer, the process is reversed. The heat pump absorbs heat from the indoor air and releases it through the outdoor unit.

NEED TO REPLACE OR INSTALL A SYSTEM?

In What Areas of the Country Would I Install a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps work best in areas of the country that see a moderate rise and fall in temperatures throughout the year. They are not as effective in climates that stay extremely cold for long periods of time. In those cases, a hybrid system or geothermal system may work well.
